Ferguson left United at the end of the 2012/2013 season with David Moyes coming in as his replacement but the former Everton manager was sacked just seven months into the job.

Answering a fan’s question in Four Four Two about the possibility, Ancelotti said: “After [Ferguson] retired in 2013, he spoke to me, but I had already given my word to Real Madrid.”

“Manchester United were too late, But otherwise I would have been interested in going to Old Trafford.”

Ancelotti went on to win the Champions League and Spanish Cup in his first season at Real, but lost his job in the second year and will now take over from Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich in the summer.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has been appointed the new Red Devils boss after replacing Dutchman and former mentor Louis Van Gaal who led the team to 5th place in the 2015/2016 season.
