Government officials said some nuns at a religious centre were the ones who informed police officers when they saw the former minister, while he was trying to throw some plastic bags over the wall.

Argentine police during the time of arresting the minister

The ex-minister named Jose Lopez, served as public works minister under the administration of Argentina’s one time president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

In Argentina, the judiciary there is investigating a good number of ex government officials, who were reported to be involved in money laundering while they served at various capacities, just like in Nigeria, where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is investigating a former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, for allegedly acquiring a mansion located in Asokoro area of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory, valued at $18million with furnishings inside estimated to cost at least $2 million, as well as having a bulletproof gym.

The police had first put the former minister behind at the Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima religious community around 55 km (35 miles) west of the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires for carrying a .22 calibre rifle without government’s permit.

The Buenos Aires provincial security boss, Cristian Ritondo, said the charges proferred on Lopez currently now is that of money laundering.

Ritondo said: “He was caught red-handed with six bags, a suitcase, a weapon and he was later identified as a Public Works Minister, Jose Lopez, from the previous government.

“This person was arrested, in principle, for carrying a weapon. Now he is being detained for possible money laundering or suspected money laundering.”

According to information relayed to journalists, it states that: “It’s almost out of a movie,” said Marcos Pena, President Macri’s cabinet chief. We’re shocked because it’s not a minor official. He led public works, where we saw so much daily corruption.”
