The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has interrogated Ali Modu Sheriff, the embattled chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)

The EFCC has been carrying out high profile investigation into the campaign fund of the PDP which allegedly came from the office of the former minister of petroleum, Diezani Madueke.

The Punch reports that Sheriff was grilled at the office of the EFCC on Wednesday, June 15 in Maiduguri, Borno state.

Sheriff was implicated in the disbursement of $115m (N23bn) which emanated from Madueke and it was reported that Borno state got N450 million.

The money was received by Mohammed Wakil who is a former minister of power and sheriff allegedly received N40m from Alhaji Mohammed Kumaila who is a PDP chieftain in the state.

The former governor of Borno was interrogated from 10am to about 5.30pm and released on an administrative bail and asked to return at a later date.

An EFCC source said: “Sheriff honoured the EFCC invitation and arrived around 10am. We released him on an administrative bail at 5.30pm. He has been asked to return at a later date.”

Sheriff is one of top chieftains of the PDP that have been under the radar of the anti-graft agency as a week ago, Senator Saidu Kumo who is the special adviser on political matters to Sheriff reportedly returned N2 million of his share to the EFCC.

Sheriff is still under a separate investigation for embezzlement when he was governor of Borno state.

During his eight years as governor, his government received N300 billion from the federation account but it was allegedly mismanaged.

This is coming at a time Sheriff is at war with his party after he was sacked as chairman and replaced with a caretaker committee chaired by Ahmed Makarfi.
He has refused to recognise the new leadership, insisting that he is still the national chairman of the party. Disobeying his party’s decision,

Sheriff invaded the PDP national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, June 13, declaring himself as party chairman. He added that his tenure would end in 2018.
