Vanguard reports about the attack on the Imo European University (IEU) which construction was initiated by Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state.
A group of disgruntled residents of Umuago Urualla village, Ideato North local council area of Imo state, have reportedly launched an attack on the university, destroying part of the building.
One of the locals commented on the inicident: “The state government acquired the 12-hectare piece of land when it planned to transfer IMSU to the place.”
He further explained that the raid may have been caused by the situation in the area — communities in Ideato South Local Government Area, whose territory was acquired for construction are duly compensated, while people in Urualla are ignored, intimidated and oppressed.
The tertiary institution was initially scheduled by the Rochas Okorocha administration as the permanent site of Imo State University (IMSU) but was later changed to IEU.
In April this year the National University Commission (NUC) gave recognition to the Eastern Palm University in Ogboko, Imo state.
