Four students of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo state have lost their lives when they were travelling to Lagos for a wedding reception.
According to Sahara Reporters, the tragic incident happened on Saturday, May 21 at the Ibule/Igbara Oke junction at a suburb of Akure town as the students were traveling in a campus bus belonging to the Redeemed Christian Fellowship.
It was reported some of the deceased were final year students of the institution.
A FUTA student, Ayobami Adegbenro confirmed the incident.
“The students were traveling for a program in a campus bus belonging to the Redeemed Christian Fellowship when a motorcyclist veered through the driver’s front wheel.
“And in attempt to avoid crushing the cyclist, the driver immediately smashed on the breaks and the vehicle somersaulted several times, flinging the students outside the bus. I counted four dead bodies”.
Another student said the vice chancellor’s daughter was getting married in Lagos although it wasn’t clear if the students were attending the same programme.
Femi Joseph who is the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force in the Ondo state police command also confirmed the sad news.
“Our officers have rushed to the scene of the accident and confirmed to me that the incident occurred between a campus bus and a commercial motorcyclist in the local community.

“Part of the information I got from the scene revealed that the bus used by students in transiting somersaulted at intervals after the driver tried to maneuver his way in order not to hit the motorcyclist along on the road.
“Our officers have also confirmed that four dead bodies who are students of FUTA were counted on the scene while the evacuation continues but we would make our investigation known very soon.”
An officer of the federal Road Safety Corps said the deceased will be taken to the morgue while it was also reported that the injured students have been taken to the hospital.
