Reactions have trailed Boko Haram’s attack on at least five communities of Ladin Buta near Khaddamari village of Jere local government area of Borno state, on Tuesday evening, May 24.

The sect members, according to reliable security source and fleeing residents, invaded the communities around 7pm on Tuesday and set ablaze many houses after killing 13 residents and injuring scores of others.

This comes against the backdrop of President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement last month that the Boko Haram terrorists have been degraded to the extent that the group can no longer seize and hold on to any territory in the country.

Buhari said government forces had taken over all the territories seized by the insurgents and destroyed their camps.

The president also said that most of the leaders of the terrorist group had been arrested, while many others had surrendered.

President Buhari had also corroborated what the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in December 2015 about defeating Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Lai Mohammed said that the Nigerian Army has met the December deadline of crushing out the insurgent group, and in an interview with BBC in February, Buhari said that his government has technically won the war against Boko Haram.

However, the recent attack on Jere local government area of Borno state has been greeted with extreme repugnance among many Nigerians and has set tongues wagging.

One of which is that of Senator Ben Murray Bruce, representing the Bayelsa East Senatorial district. According to him, the government has to do talk less about winning the fight against Boko Haram and allow the military do the fighting.
