The senior special assistant on public affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe has said the process that led to the emergence of Ali Modu Sheriff as chairman was never recognized.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, May 23, Okupe also said the present structure of the party is still the same. He said: “The party is been made by a coalition that is for people, stakeholders in this stirring committee under the leadership of coalitions headed by Ibrahim Matu”.
On the attendance of several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors and lawmakers at the convention. Okupe said: “We had a massive representation of major stakeholders in the party such as former governors, former ministers, former chairmen of parastatals and former legislators”.
The former senior special assistant said: “We disagree with the power that did not exist which the national disciplinary committee of the party exercised by prolongation of their tenure and every other action consequent upon that structure including the congresses and the national convention ultimately scheduled in Port Harcourt. They were all enormities that did not stand before the law. The Markafi led committee is still also a product of that contraption.
We love our party; we don’t want our party to scatter. Even though we have lost an election to the All Progressives Congress (APC), they are not a political association as such, it is a conglomeration of various groups of political tendencies. They still do not have a party, they are not strong on ground there are many places where they don’t exist.
PDP is the only party in Nigeria that has a culture, a tradition, a record of performance. Yes we have some issues; there are evidences of some of our people who have exhibited embarrassing corruption and all of that. But that is what makes a human organisation to be exceptional.
The legitimacy of a political organization is measured by people who support it, not just within the political organization itself but with the nation at large. Politicians believe Nigerians don’t have a choice which is not true.”
On the national secretariat of the party in Abuja been sealed off. Okupe said: “The secretariat is under lock and key to prevent anarchy and chaos. The status quo has been uprooted, the chairman and working committee as of Saturday, May 21, did not exist anymore. Though the chairman during a press conference he held says his still in power so there is a conflict.
Unless the police immediately step in we might have some ugliness on in hands and that was just a preventive action taken by the police force to prevent violence and savoury behaviour of some people. This is a step in the right direction.”
Ali Modu Sheriff was relieved of his position as acting chairman of the PDP following his last minute cancellation of the party’s national convention in Port Harcourt on Saturday, May 21.
The party has named a 7-man caretaker committee to manage the affairs of the party. The committee will be headed by former two-time governor of Kaduna state, Senator Ahmed Makarfi with Senator Ben Obi as secretary.
The other members of the committee include; Senator Odion Ugbesia, Senator Abdul Ningi, Barr. Kevin Usman, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and Mrs. Aisha Aliyu.
